SDI GROUP UK SHORTLISTED FOR RETAIL BUSINESS SHOW AWARD
SDI Group UK has been shortlisted for the supply chain solution category at the Retail Business Show Awards 2009 for its work with leading home shopping retailer JD Williams. The judges were looking for solutions that have made the biggest impact within the retail sector – exhibiting measurable business benefits and bottom line contribution or showing genuine innovation and development – with the winner set to be announced at the end of January at a prestigious event held at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
SDI Group UK has worked closely with JD Williams to design and install an advanced garments on hangers (GOH) automated material handling solution at a new facility at Hadfield in Cheshire, which has consolidated three existing facilities into the single site, significantly reducing overheads by removing warehousing and transport costs from its operation and streamlining supply chain processes.
JD Williams selected SDI Group UK to develop a turn-key solution for an automated GOH warehouse system and a complete fit-out of the facility including mechanical and electrical services such as sprinklers, lighting, fire detection and HVAC. SDI Group UK designed and installed a storage and conveyor system, which integrated into the new purpose-built warehouse. The four-tier GOH structure comprises two powered loops and three retractable receiving booms, providing capacity for 420,000 individual garments.
Commenting on the solution, Paul Robinson, Engineering Manager at JD Williams said: “SDI’s mechanised, high-density storage solution has achieved real benefits to our business including significant labour savings and low running costs. By developing a mechanised rather than a fully automated system, JD Williams has achieved a solution that possesses greater long-term flexibility and is adaptable to ever changing business and fashion needs. The installation was delivered on time and within budget and SDI worked professionally throughout the entire project overcoming delays that were outside of their control.”
